upgrade the kernel on the VM with debian lenny

hi

my debian Lenny is installed as a Virtual Machine on the ESX server.
after the kernel upgrade from 2.6.18-5-686 to 2.6.26-1-686 it doesn't start anymore
and I'm getting these messages:
Code:
Begin: Mounting root file system... Begin: Running /scripts/local-top ... done.
Begin: Waiting for root file system ...

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initframs)
even the old kernel won't start now.

howto solve this problem?

I solved this problem.

/boot/grub/menu.lst must be edited manually,

for example from /dev/hda6 to /dev/sda6.

this problem occurs each time after kernel upgrade.

this debian was originally installed on a normal PC with a physical IDE harddisk and later was migrated as a Virtual Machine (Guest).

my VMWARE server (ESX) uses virual SCSI harddisk.

since then, my debian is still thinking, it's installed on IDE instead of SCSI and writes a wrong information in /boot/grub/menu.lst -> /dev/hda instead of /dev/sda.

where is this information stored and howto change this?

http://www.debian.org/releases/lenny/releasenotes

You should have read them before upgrading to Lenny.

this problem should be solved now !

I changed in /boot/grub/menu.lst from /dev/hda6 to /dev/sda6
Code:
# kopt=root=/dev/sda6 ro
and then
Code:
update-grub
