upgrade python 2.4 to 2.5 question

hello,

im trying to install the vodafone mobile connect modem, and its asking for python 2.5, since etch only has 2.4 i downloaded 2.5 through apt-get and changed the symlink of python so that it would refer to 2.5. unfortunately when i try installing the vodafone package it still tells me that i have python2.4.

any ideas on how i can fix this?

thank you for your time.

For one thing it likely needs the dev packages as well as the normal ones.

Also make sure that you either install these dependencies from the Etch repositories or from backports.org so you know these packages will get along with whatever other software that relates to python on your system.

Hopefully you can get it going in Etch. Lots of things will work fine as long as they don't depend on versions of dependencies that are too many upgrades newer than what can run on Etch.

If it fails and you need the software to work, Debian Lenny is near release ready (sometime in September or October they're saying), so a dist-upgrade to Lenny might be something to consider. A lot of the latest stuff is in there that'll be compatible with newer software.
