(UNetbootin not working) how to make a pendrive testing installer netinstall?

Since UNetbootin not working, one has to find a way but there is nothing to do a dd command.

http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dist...mages/netboot/

I would like to install testing debian from the pendrive

this results in kernel panic

linus72 12-07-2009 06:47 AM

ok

well, if you got Unetbootin ready to go
I made a small iso and .zip netbootcd installer with plop
bootmanager

its like 7MB
dont burn iso to CD
just use Unetbootin to install to usb
and reboot
it can netinstall ubuntu/deb/mandriva,opensuse,fedora,etc

NetBooter.iso && NetBooter.zip

A.2.2. USB memory stick

It's also possible to install from removable USB storage devices. For example a USB keychain can make a handy Debian install medium that you can take with you anywhere.

The easiest way to prepare your USB memory stick is to download hd-media/boot.img.gz, and use gunzip to extract the 256 MB image from that file. Write this image directly to your memory stick, which must be at least 256 mb in size. Of course this will destroy anything already on the memory stick. Then mount the memory stick, which will now have a FAT filesystem on it. Next, download a Debian netinst CD image, and copy that file to the memory stick; any filename is ok as long as it ends in .iso.

There are other, more flexible ways to set up a memory stick to use the debian-installer, and it's possible to get it to work with smaller memory sticks. For details, see Section 4.3, “Preparing Files for USB Memory Stick Booting”.

Some BIOSes can boot USB storage directly, and some cannot. You may need to configure your BIOS to boot from a “removable drive” or even a “USB-ZIP” to get it to boot from the USB device. For helpful hints and details, see Section 5.1.4, “Booting from USB Memory Stick”.
oups I did dd the /boot.img.gz to the pendrive

then copied hte files http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dist...ages/hd-media/
to teh usb.

I copied:
wget http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/da...86-netinst.iso
Quote:

cp debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso /media/pendrive
i note that it is a daily-builds/daily/20091206-5/i386/iso-cd

boot the pc
then
enter enter
load modules, no idea, fighting
ok it loads an installer
wow

then >
error
not network card found :(
damn sky2 and kernel.

So the result:
uname -a
Code:

2.26-2-486
is there better kernel in the daily snapshots? I guess I have the best no?
or mzy vmlinuw and initrg.gz are too old http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dist...ages/hd-media/

damn :(

frenchn00b 12-07-2009 07:32 AM

ok on the daily built cdrom, i found files
/mnt/tmp/install.386#

Code:

# ls
gtk  initrd.gz  install.bat  vmlinuz

but boot.img is missing.
what can i do .

the pendrive hangs with boot.img from NL site
and those files from daily built

linus72 12-07-2009 07:37 AM

so, why not go the easy route and use the NetBooter.iso and install via unetbootin?

I tried the debian daily built because I knew it would work wiht my sky2. I could do it with the external usb drive. it was workign, and testing regular does not accept my ethernet card.
it has new kernel or modules, i dont knwo.
that why i tried this route that could have worked.
seems like the daily built cannot be put on a pendrive :(

NetBooter.iso can it download the daily built of testing?

pfff not easy to install debian

linus72 12-07-2009 07:59 AM

the NetBooter can net-install any variety of debian, ubuntu, etc
testing, squeeze,etc

frenchn00b 12-08-2009 03:57 AM

yesterday with the debian, I got this error http://gxemul.sourceforge.net/gxemul...c/debian-5.png
I followed through the install procedure of debian

okay for multidistro. how does it work to get installed?
It is an iso. so iso is cdrom. how could I make it transformed on my pendrive please?

it seems that it is a bug from debian installer
http://systec.blogsite.org/wiki/inde...found_BL460cG6
Quote:

Debian Netinstaller cdrom not found BL460cG6

The installation on the new HP BL460cG6 servers is a little bit tricky because the cdrom is not found correctly by the installer if you are using ILO2. So you have to choose the cdrom device manually.
Step by step

1. Load CD-Rom drivers from removable media? -> NO
2. Manually select CD-Rom module device? -> YES
3. Module needed for CD-Rom: -> cdrom
4. Device file for accessing the CD-Rom -> /dev/cdrom

Thats it

linus72 12-08-2009 05:56 AM

yeah
the kernel not found thing hits me too...

did you try NetBooter yet or no?

frenchn00b 12-08-2009 06:34 AM

Unfortunately, in trying to mount the drive I've run into some problems. The only one I seem to be able to relate to is the one in my title.
After plugging in the USB device, this message appears in dmesg:

Code:

Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods

linus72 12-08-2009 06:38 AM

you can also boot netbooter off a hard drive partition and net-install
that way as netbootcd runs in ram

add this entry to your menu.lst/grub.cfg

Code:

title NetbootCD-3.1.2
root (hdx,x)
kernel /boot/kexec.bzI quiet norestore base nolocal
initrd /boot/nbinit3.gz

Code:

menuentry "NetbootCD-3.1.2" {
linux /boot/kexec.bzI quiet norestore base nolocal
    initrd /boot/nbinit3.gz
}
