XFce is a great desktop in my opinion. I've tried Ubuntu with Gnome 3.x and it's trash IMO. I have no love for KDE 4.x either as both have completely broken my networking ability due to their slipshod USB device handling and polling for USB based networking devices.

XFce has really matured greatly, but yes while it does as of recent add in a few dependencies from Gnome, it's still not Gnome. I use 4.8 and I love it. Yes I had to install some extra dependency packages 4.6 never used, but I'm okay with it. Too tell you the truth KDE could get ripped out of Slackware tomorrow and modularized down to only programs and libraries with minimal dependencies and I wouldn't bat an eye or shed a tear.

This is certainly true.

I do think, however, that in spite of the depends that you would pull in (plenty) that difficulty is greatly reduced from times past.

That does not counter your reasoning in anyway. It can be a real pain.

Not being a fan of KDE or qt, I have never tried KMyMoney. Just downloading a full install DVD of Mageia to take a look at it. I will be putting KDE on it (I like to have one on here to show folks) and will have to look into that. My wife does the books but I keep her up and running and researching tool. I admit to ignoring the KDE stuff. Better check it out. She may want it and not know it.

Thanks for that.

As far as I know KDE runs no services which would poll for usb network devices. Networking should be handled by whatever network manager you have installed or by the networking init scripts which call ifup/down, dhlclient/dhcpcd/whatever, etc based on the configuration information in /etc/network/interfaces.
