unable to start after dist-upgrade

Hello
I am using GRUB 0.91 to load my box; I have windows on hda1 and debian on hda2 and debian on hdb, which has several partitions.
After #apt-get dist-upgrade I am having some problems.
When I boot into hdb2, the system stops at (Starting diald: fifo-created_)
The end underscore blinks and nothing happens.

thanks for your help

ctrl-C when it stops and see what happens...it should move foward,If it does, remove that module.
If you need the module then leave it.

Hi,
Hum, I know it is not going to help you much but apt-get dist upgrade is
not really a sensible thing to do. Did you have apt-listbugs installed ?
It could have warned you NOT to install such or such buggy package. Now
what can be traced to to try to guess what your problem is? It can be anything.
Also, which version of Debian ? Which kernel ? It's not possible to help you with
so little information.
You also seem to have an older version of GRUB, which is at least up to 1.2( that is
mine) .

Thanks for your attempt, I did #apt-get dist-upgrade because of an advise on
http://debianhelp.org/module-pnForum...opic-9927.html
An ignorant user like me does not know any better.
why apt-get dist-upgrade is not a good thing to do, man apt-get says it should take car of all dependencies (apt-get has a "smart" conflict resolution system ...)
it indicates apt_preferences for overriding the general settigns for individual packages.

now, my system.
#cat /etc/debian_version
3.0
was the last time I checked when I was able to login.

#uname –a
Linux debian 2.6.8 #1 Sat Aug…. i686 GNU/Linux
