Unable to change existing smbpasswd on user; pam problem??

Hi Everyone,

I am not sure whether it belong here, but as I have a running samba on my notebook with gentoo without any problems, I guess it's debian problem...

I am trying to set up a samba server, no problem so far...
It's getting strange, when I try to change change an existing password ...
Code:

admin@Nandus:~$ smbpasswd
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
read_socket_with_timeout: timeout read. read error = Connection reset by peer.
machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the tconX on the IPC$ share. Error was : Read error: Connection reset by peer.
Failed to change password for admin
admin@Nandus:~$ smbpasswd
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
read_socket_with_timeout: timeout read. read error = Connection reset by peer.
machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the tconX on the IPC$ share. Error was : Read error: Connection reset by peer.
Failed to change password for admin
admin@Nandus:~$

my first guess is, that it has something to do with pam... although I cannot prove it

I gets even wierder... the codesample from above comes from the user, which has been created upon the system installation. But on this one I can change the smbpasswd through root without problem...

BTW: I am using debian sarge (new installer) and
samba_3.0.7-1
samba-common_3.0.7-1
libpam-modules_0.76-22
libpam-runtime_0.76-22
libpam0g_0.76-22
hope it I got the typo in debian style.... ;)

Short: I am kinda frustrated, 'cause I thought debian was so rock stable...

Thanks in advance

I would ask on the #debian channel on the IRC, Freenode server, those guys know their stuff.
