troubles running Debian 4.0r5

Tried installing Debian 4.0r5
netinstall and from dvd i386 and AMD64

Run into the problem with both

Using AMD 64 FX55 processor single core
Asus A8N-SLI mobo
Nvidia Geforce 6800 pcie card
Audigy2 pci
512MB ram

Installs fine though not crazy about the installers options
when it comes to packages

Used to slackware though thought I would try Debian

Kernel loads fine get to where system starts to
automatically load GDM for Gnome login
I get a black screen for a minute then I get an array of
colors sometimes flashing sometimes not.

I can ctrl+alt+F* to consoles however the consoles are
running very unusual

After typing in a line and hitting enter I have to ctrl+alt+F* to another console and then back to console I was typing on
to get the console to update

ie login I type in my userid hit enter screen stops
dont get the password line until I exit out and come back
then it shows up same for most other commands. Sometimes it does work
however it will fill screen up and the cursor will go below view of screen not cycling the info up properly.

slax distro 6.0.9 does the same thing when it comes to loading X but consoles are not screwed up atleast that I recall will check again.

loaded Debian 4.0r5 onto my other system
AMD 64 3000+
foxcon nvidia board
512mb ram
integrated everything
nforce 6150 integrated video
works just fine

tried a few things but dont know what I am doing exactly
xorg seems to be using nv driver which should be working
tried installing nvidia driver via nvidia script and got error saying "cc" was not in path check to see gcc installed and "cc" in path.

downloading lenny right now to check it out see if it will work.
slackware 12.2 is working fine on my main box which debian4.0r5 will not. slax is supposed to be based on slackware 12.2 but is not working.
really should check the packages and software versions.

appreciate any help. tried search button and google for answers.

Have you tried the vesa driver in /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
You can boot into single user mode to edit the file and try it.
To install Nvidia from script you'll need to install linux-kernel-headers and gcc with apt. You'll probably also get the "cc is wrong version compared to what kernel was built with" error, do not abort, go ahead with it.
