Trouble with old Sun Sparc machine (X not working)

Hi.

I was trying to use Debian GNU/Linux "Squeeze" on a real old Sun (SPARC) machine (a Sun Blade 100) with home-compiled kernel v3.0.4.

When I try and use X, it fails and I get the following output in the log (note the bit about module "mach64" not being found):

Code:

What could be the problem?

Hi,

first a discalaimer: I have no experience running Debian on sparc hardware.

The not found driver is the kernel module for hardware accel. Did you compile this in? One way to get a decent config is to copy the config for the last working kernel. Eg
Code:

cp /boot/config-x.y.z-foo /usr/src/.config
make oldconfig
make menuconfig
fakeroot make-kpkg clean
fakeroot make-kpkg <options> kernel-image kernel-headers

Regardless, X should still work without it, but your xorg.conf seems to be trying to load it. Have you tried running X without an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (or at least without the dri options)?

The config I used was that from the original Debian kernel (version 2.6.32-5), mostly. I activated some options for drivers for other devices (wireless card was one). But didn't touch anything related to video. Mach64 driver was selected ("atyfb" driver) in there, but not compiled as a module but rather built-in. Could that be the problem? And I tried commenting out the dri options and it seemed to do pretty much the same thing. (forgot to mention: when X is run, it doesn't just bugger out with the given stuff, rather it goes to a black screen and freezes (and requires a logon from a remote terminal to kill), and after killing I find the given log)

Hmm, could be worth trying the the driver compiled as a module. Also, please try running X without an xorg.conf

Another option is to load the (failsafe) vesa driver. Just replace "mach64" with "vesa" in the Device section of the xorg.conf file. This is the quickest way as it doesn't require a recompiled kernel ;)

I might try the module thing later. However, I just ran without the xorg.conf and got a similar result (only now I get that the video is out of range (monitor complaint), though with a config I can suppress that via setting the ReferenceClock).

Log result:

Yup. Tried that, and it failed too. This time, it didn't even freeze at a blank screen, instead it just kicked me right back to the command prompt. The error was "(EE) VESA(0): Cannot read V_BIOS (5) Input/output error" and "(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration."

The full log, if it helps (should I keep posting these long logs or not?):

Right... :o Well, I'd have to bow out as I too don't have any experience with the SPARC platform...

Question though, you said you took the .config file from the stock 2.6 kernel. Does the system work with said stock 2.6 kernel?

New: I just tried that, and it doesn't work -- same problem.

Is there anyone here who might have more experience with the platform?
