text mode please

Need a little help on runlevels in debain... Was trying to get it to boot into text mode but it doesn't seem to be any runlevels that do this. What am I missing ?????? need to be able to install Nvidia drivers but cant get X to quit so I can install them.

Everything is run in runlevel 2 in Debian. To stop X and install nvidia drivers, do something like
Code:
#/etc/init.d/kdm stop
When you have installed the drivers, start X by doing
Code:
#/etc/init.d/kdm start

Thanks, reddazz
Simple answer, Simple solution...
Although the default window manager is gdm.... but I did run into one other problem installing the Nvidia drivers.. Used the Synaptic Package Manager to what I thought would install the source for the kernel but it only downloaded the tar.bz2 file and didn't unpack it... any reason why ??????

Never had such a problem so I am not sure how to resolve it. On the few occassions that I use Debian, I usually install the kernel-source with apt or synaptic and it installs without any problems. Maybe someone who is more experienced with Debian will come along an help you out.

You may want to read this page I would recommend the module-assistant method or the pre-built drivers is the even easier solution if running Debian kernel.
