Synaptics not working

I am very new with linux bare with me maybe i will get the hang of this. I just installed Mepis on my computer and when i try to open synaptic, it will not load. I click the icon and it will appear on my task bar at the bottom and show the symbol that it is working i wait for 2 minutes and it just disappears never loading . Is there anyone that can help me out on getting synaptic to work?

If you start any program from the concole command line you might see the relevant error messages or check your system logs. 99.9% of any errors can be backtraced in the logs.

what desktop do u use? kde?

I had a similar problem using GNOME when logged in as root. The shortcut to synaptic will prompt you for the root password when it loads. If you're already root though, it just kinda craps out. If you're logged in as a regular user it will work.

The lesson: Never log in as root in a window manager.
