Files???? Do you mean your /home directory? If its a seperate partition, you're laughin'. Just be sure to leave it as is when you change your distro. You can also bur it to disk or copy it to some free disk space, if you have any. If you're talking about specific programs, don't worry. The Debian repository makes any other distro look shameful in its catalogue of what's available. Its the biggest.
Any personal files, mail, favorites,etc., need to either be burned to CD or put somewhere that is not involved in partitioning. The smart thing to do is to try a new distro by dual booting rather that switch distros by going cold turkey from one to another.
