superblock probe failed

Hi,

I am trying to compile a new kernel on my Toshiba Satellite A210-14S laptop and get this error msg while booting:

Code:
(1,1):ocfs2_fill_super:561 ERROR: superblock probe failed!
VFS: Cannot open root device "sdb4" or unknown-block(8,4)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option; here are the avaliable partitions:
0300 4194302 hda driver: ide-cdrom
0800 8192 sda driver: sd
0810 156290904 sda driver: sd
  0811 153600 sdb1
  0812 52433343 sdb2
  0813 1052257 sdb3
  0814 101225722 sdb4
Kernel panic - not syncing:
VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(8,4)
so, what might be the problem? here is my entry in menu.lst from grub:

Code:
title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.22.9
root (hd0,3)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22.9 acpi=off root=/dev/sdb4
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22.9
and my .config from kernel:

http://www.onlyfree.de/php/pasteserv...ow.php?id=3739

i have already tried almost anything I found on google...

I will be grateful for any hint

greetings

here is my fstab:

Code:
home:/home/cav# cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/sda4 / reiserfs notail 0 1
/dev/sda3 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hda /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sda2 /win ntfs defaults 0 0
i have tried adding root=/dev/sda4 too but got the same error msg.

Greetings

Looks like you should change sda to sdb in fstab, but first post /boot/grub/device.map as well.

it works with sda with the standard debian kernel, just when i try to start my own kernel it shows me that my hdd is sdb instead of sda... anyway here is my device.map:

Code:
cav@home:~$ cat /boot/grub/device.map
(hd0) /dev/sda
I will try changing it to sdb.

update: nope, still the same err

Do you have any bios settings for the hd's that might confuse udev and grub? Is LBA set in the BIOS?
How did you set your kernel options since you have a lot of drivers included in the kernel? Did you start by copying an old config from under /boot/ and do a "make oldconfig"?
Did you try booting without an initrd? You can comment it out by editing grub while booting.
Do you have another "root=" option set in grub above the kernel stanzas?
