Summer time, and my clocks wrong yet again

All last year this bugged me. I've had six months of blissfully correct timekeeping, but the old problem has reared its ugly head again.

My clock's an hour out. The actual correct time right now is: Sunday March 25, 2007 10:41:55pm (according to http://www.thetimenow.com/index.cgi?loc=256) which is London, British Summer Time.

Debian:~# date
Sun Mar 25 21:45:33 BST 2007

That's what my machine says. Clearly it knows full well it's summer, and the minutes aren't far wrong - at least it's good enough for me - but it's showing GMT time marked up as BST.

My timezone is correct. tzdump is correct. And I'm running out of hair to pull - why is something so unbelievably simple proving so bloody difficult??!!

Somebody - please help me! I can't believe I'm the only one who's going through this. What's going on?

I simply can't go another year like this. I've tried googling, I've RTFM, I'm ready to just nuke the machine and install a different OS now, I simply can't carry on like this.

Somebody save me from reinstalling windows, please! I've wasted enough of my life on this trivial petty little problem.

sounds like a daylight savings issue if it happens every 6 months or so.

is the bios adjusting for it or maybe a setting lost in a config file somewhere.

Emma77 03-25-2007 05:50 PM

It's not the bios. The bios is set to UTC (which luckily for me just happens to be GMT) and Daylight Savings are disabled.

So yes, it must be a config file somewhere. But where??? There seems to be absolutely no documentation about it whatsoever. Plenty about setting a timezone, indeed i tried tzsetup, but all it allowed me to do was set my timezone (which was and still is correct) and completely ignored Daylight Savings altogether. I expected a "Adjust for Daylight Savings? <YES> <NO>" type thing - but no such luck.

apt-get install ntpdate
I never set the time. Never.

On the advice from this forum, i installed chrony. Apart from the fact that i can't get it to update the time no matter what ports i open on my routers, it will only sync UTC anyway. It woudln't solve my Daylight Savings issue, i'd still be an hour out.

But, ever eager to try anything once - i have removed chrony and installed ntpdate instead. Immediate success. Well done cougyr.

This has been plaguing me for almost two years. Finally a solution! Thankyou. Thankyou. Thankyou.

Don't worry to much, when I tried to change my clock it crashed my Etch system twice and now it refuses to show a clock at all, I was at work for almost 2 minuets extra last night!

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 03:48 AM.
