stupid question about exiting X

I just installed debian sarge and need to exit x11 to install nvidia drivers. I ctrl+alt+backspace, and it sends me to the graphical user login. Then I ctrl+alt+backspace again, and it resets to graphical login...

to stop X (or actually your display manager) from restarting
go to a terminal (ctrl+alt+f1) and as root
type:
/etc/init.d/xdm stop

this command will be different depending on:
1. The display manager you use, ie xdm, kdm, gdm
2. The location of the scripts for your distro.

The above is for Debian.

You can open a virtual console by pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 to F6 without quitting X.

Press CTRL+ALT+F1 (first virtual terminal) and then close X by pressing CTRL+C.

That should help.
