Stuck on command Promp after change of Graphics card
 

hi

can someone pls help...

i had a old nvidia mx4000 graphics card and i have replaced it with a new one (club 3d gefeorce 6600 255mb).

after this when i went to start debian it says it cant launch the xserver. (so im just on command prompt). i think the error message was it could not detect output or omething

well i tried reconfiguring it but didnt know which make to choose from the list of options of the names of graphics card.

please help on what i should do as im completely stuck.

Usually dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 on Sarge or xserver-xorg on etch or sid. Then select the driver "nv" or "nvidia". This should get you a basic gui, but you'll have to find the right drivers online most likely to get the acceleration and all that working...

"vesa" is a safe choice for a driver as well. I didn't say "best", just "safe". It will generally work with anything, allowing you to get the driver installation you really want sorted out.

You need to reinstall the driver. The latest is :
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run and you probably already have it. If not get it from www.nvidia.com

BUT you will probably need to apply a patch, definitely so if you are running Linux 2.16. You'll know that you need the patch 'cos the driver installation will fail.

Go to http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=62021 and follow the instructions there.

In the meantime using the nv driver should work. The nvidia one is what you probably have and won't work until you reinstall the driver.
