Strange random lockups

I'm getting occasional lockups with testing and unstable, installed using the debian-installer (Beta 3). These happen seemingly at random, in X and at the console. I experienced this a few months ago then went back to Slackware, but I do adore Debian, so i'm back again. I use my own kernel configuration and kernel 2.6.4, which works fine on every other distribution. I'm installing this on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 1840 laptop. Is there any way to find out what's going wrong? I obviously can't find the problem bacause of the lockups.

We need more info which may be hard for you to provide. Faulty RAM? Run memtest86 on that machine. What filesystem are you using? If you use a Knoppix cd for a lengthy period of time do the lockups also occur?

Hardware may be going bad. Sorry if this isn't of much help. Good luck!

r u sure ur not running windows? hehe.

seriously though, a kernel recompile may be in order. get that shiney new 2.6.5 that you've always wanted. maybe disable some of the modules or swap in and out your hardware until you find the culprit.

are you doing anything in particular that causes the lockups? virtual consoles in Debian are different than other distributions (CRTL-ALT-F1 to get out of X, but just ALT-F7 to get back)

Nothing is wrong with my laptop, or kernel 2.6.4 (every other distro works fine). Something is wrong with something in Debian testing/unstable, and it's been wrong for several months at least. I can't see any peculiarities in the way I set the system up that would cause it to hang. I'm currently back on Slackware, resigned to only running Debian on my desktop machines. I don't use 2.6.5 because of a pretty serious usb bug. Thanks for replying anyways.
