Stop at 811
 

Hi All,

I'm trying to install testing on a Dell Vostro 1510. Everything goes well up to the end of package install. At the end of the install (811 packages out of 811) the system freezes. I've used this same cd (netinstall.iso) with other cpus with no problem. Has anyone run into this issue before? I've tried the install 3 times now on the same laptop with the same results.

Just saw the other 811 post. But why does it work on 1 system and not the other?

Hmm... maybe I can install stable and upgrade to testing. Thoughts?

Since Lenny just became Stable, there has been a flood of new package updates into testing. You could try installing stable and upgrading to testing, or just pull another testing install CD weekly build after things settle down a bit.

Ok, just tried to install stable on the same laptop. The same thing happens- install gets to "Retrieving file 811 of 811" and then freezes. So this is not a cd, specific download issue. What gives?

You might try a minimalist installation. When you get to the "select software" bit in the installation routine don't check anything and uncheck anything that is checked by default. See if you still have a problem. Doing this should be a lot quicker since you won't have 811 packages to install. Also, testing install are updated weekly (or maybe daily I don't remember which) so if all else fails it will be fixed soon. Of course it's important that you report this problem to debian.

If you have confirmed that your install media works on other computers you may be having a hardware issue with Debian testing. Perhaps you could try to use a Linux live CD (Knoppix, Ubuntu, etc.) and see if any of your hardware components are not recognized. Just a thought. Have you tried another version of Linux on your laptop?

At start up I get the message "MMC0 unknown controller." I wonder if this is the issue.
