step by step download???

Hi,

I want to download Debian from a friends computer and shove it on disc so I can install it on my machine which isn't yet online.

1. What is the latest good testing release?
2. Where do I download it from? NB I have a good connection 1.5mb
3. Do i just make a data disc of it and put it in my machine or what?

cheers
Ben

Download the CD or DVD images from: http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/weekly/ You probably only need the first 2 or 3 CD's. Burn the CD's as iso images not data discs. You can run the installer by booting CD 1. When it asks you to set up apt, select CDROM as the source instead of http or ftp. You can then use the other CDs you download as the source for installing the software you need.

ok thanks, just one more - what do I download?
I have the following links...
alpha/
arm/
i386/
ia64/
actually I'm not gonna list them all but it goes on like that, they all seem to be called sarge which I'm guessing is their codename for testing releases?

Those are for different types of processors. If you have a Pentium or Athlon XP, you want the i386 images. If you have a Macintosh, you want the powerpc images. The ia64 images are for the recent 64 bit processors from Intel and AMD.

if i want to change OS later on (maybe between debian and mandrake), then can i change it without affecting my programs or files? assuming that I have the os, programs and files in separate partitions?

Yes you can dual boot between Mandrake and Debian if you so desire.
I'm not a great Mandrake fan, but there is one area in which it shines, and that is in altering and setting up partitions. I've worked on a number of systems that never got Mandrake installed but the partitioning scheme was set up from the Mandrake installer. Mandrake from 9.0 up should do it, maybe even earlier.
