Starting with simple question :)

Ok, now that I have trashed windows with a Knoppix 5.0.1 DVD...I went immediately to the knoppix forums. As I was reading them I found out that when you do the knoppix-installer program w/ the dvd it becomes "debian like"

um...eh!!?? does this mean that i can read up on debian and it should theoretically work then for me? I've used apt-get in the past with my RH9 dual booting, but the dkpkg system is a little different.

I certainly dont mind reading manuals, (i've always been told to RTFM anyhow lol...)

just wondering for a point of reference i guess...debian help files = for me? and should I start now downloading .debs instead of the .tar.gz like i'm used to?

It means that as best it can when using the knoppix-installer it converts the Knoppix to what would be a similarly installed Debian system. You will run into problems though when trying to update packages like the sysvinit which can with a bit of effort be updated to a Debian version not the hacked version that is in Knoppix. Your really better off if you want a Debian like system installing either Debian itself or something like Ubuntu.

You should always try on a Debian system to install with .deb unless the .tar.gz's are going to be installed in /usr/local if the software you want is not available in .deb then you can use the checkinstall package to create one that you can install with dpkg.

Noo! lol...I just paid $29.99 for this book 'n dvd =\ /sigh lol

[the local barne's and noble store was fresh out of all their linux help books 'cept for a few. A few of those "news stand" mags w/ distro included or Knoppix books. The man [and i kinda felt bad and angry] said "Debian? Heh, they sell as fast as we can get 'em."

Although Debian is what was recommended to me by just about every friend I asked. One of them liked gentoo, all the rest debian.

edit: wanted to send you a pm saying thanks for the info HappyTux, [to try to stay clutter free] but since we can't i guess its just "Thanks man." lol...

Well there is really nothing saying you can't install it just be aware that there is problems with doing it and asking for support in a Debian forum is probably not going to get you too far as once most Debian people hear/see knoppix they want nothing to do with it. Not that there is anything that will be totally wrong with it, it is a great live/rescue CD in fact before I went with pure Debian 3 or 4 years ago I was using Knoppix and even then it was better installed to the hard drive than any of the Redhat/Mandrake/Suse installs I used in the years before that it just has limitations using it as a Debian based system on hard drive install good to learn the ins and outs of Debian though if you fry the install your back up and running in like 20 minutes. Your welcome BTW.
