Start/stop SSH service?

I changed the port SSH listens to and wanted to restart the service for the changes to take effect.

I tried "/etc/init.d/ssh stop" and got "Stopping OpenBSD Secure Shell server: sshd."

However "ps -C ssh" shows that ssh is still running. Furthermore when I tried "/etc/init.d/ssh restart" I got "OpenBSD Secure Shell server not in use (/etc/ssh/sshd_not_to_be_run)." Which leads me to believe the "/etc/init.d/ssh" commands were completely ineffectual.

So I am still trying to restart the ssh daemon.

Debian 5.0.4

Try restarting sshd with the word restart.

Have you rebooted?

Still nothing

After reboot the changes made to the conf files did not seem to affect connection as ssh still only accepted port 22. I finally rtfm'd and enterd sshd -p with the port I needed and now everything works.

You shouldn't have to add the port number if you have it in sshd_config and ssh_config.
