Stable x Security: I'd like to understand...

Hello people,

I've installed the Debian 3.0 R1 in my K6-2 400 and I saw that all the programs are old versions (Kernel 2.2.20, ipchains, KDE 2.2.2, ext2, etc) and my doubt: what does it mean a stable and security? For example, the ext2 isn't a good choice, is it?

Ext2 and 3 are fine. In fact they have something the other FSes (IIRC, dunno XFS maybe?) don't have and thats extended attributes, so you can "chattr +i -R /somedir" and make it unwritable by anyone including root. Ipchains is "combat proven" stable and so is Kernel 2.2.2x. With Kernel 2.2.2x you can use Solar Designer's OWL patches to harden it.
