Hi i'm currently running debian sarge stable with 2.6.8 kernel, where the sshd config file is the one that debian provided except i changed the port to 1234 and X11Forwarding to yes instead of no. i have a putty ssh client on windoze but it always gives the following error:
X connection to localhost:10.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
when i try to run any x11 applications.
Uhmm. Do you have an X server on your windows box? How did you set up Putty to deal with an X11 connection? (It's in the Connection-> SSH-> Tunnels section.)
I've never done X11 forwarding from Putty. It can be done, but Putty doesn't have it's own X11 server. You need to configure it to use another program. (I have done X11 forwarding from cygwin though.)
Hi, i do have x server setup thru apt-get install x-window-system. i don't really know how to set the connection-> ssh-> Tunnels section, not sure what ports are involved. also, does putty have to have an X server of its own to do X11 forwarding? I thought the machine bein connected to would serve X, and putty would just display it somehow.
X is a little weird in it's definitions. The "Server" is the graphical interface that you see and interact with. If you are on the Windows machine, then the X server must be on the windows machine. The programs running on your Linux box are the clients that are to be served by the X server on the Windows box. With an X server on the Linux box, you can use X windows while sitting at the Linux box.
You say that you have X11 forwarding set to yes in the ssh daemon config file, then all you really need (I think) is to set up the windows side. Again, I haven't done ssh forwarding using putty before. You will need to find an X server for Windows. I have done X11 forwarding before from cygwin for windows (it includes both X11 and ssh).
