Sound stopped working

Debian Testing, HP D200MT (Intel based)

gateway:~# uname -a
Linux gateway 2.6.15-1-686 #2 Mon Mar 6 15:27:08 UTC 2006 i686 GNU/Linux

alsmixergui shows Card: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 Chip: Analog Devices AD1981B

not muted, speakers working (plugged into my laptop)

It was working a few weeks ago, and we moved the computer to another room. it was around then that it stopped. kmix and alsamixergui show unmuted/sounds up, and apps act like they are playing, but no sound comes out at all.

any ideas?

Hi

Just a possibility....

You said that it was "around that time" the sound stopped working. Was it when you reassembled (plugged everything back in) that you found it did not work? Do you have more than one sound card (i.e. a separate card and on-board sound)?

What you have described sounds like a component issue, with the speakers, etc. not connected in some way because you indicate the multimedia apps seems to be working as though they are issuing sound. I had a similar issue not long ago and I found that I had connected my speakers to the on-board sound jack instead of the PCI card jack that the system was configured for.

May not be the problem, but just a thought...

Bob

have you checked all of the sound sliders on kmix, is pcm at the bottom because if that goes to the bottom you get no sound but it does not show up as muted.

I also had this problem. Then I checked actived modules, but can't find any sound modules.(lsmod)

Then I list all installed modules,also can't find any sound modules.(modprobe -l)

So, I decided reinstall kernel as below. Then the problem solved.

apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-2.6.15-1-686
reboot
