alsmixergui shows Card: Intel 82801DB-ICH4 Chip: Analog Devices AD1981B
not muted, speakers working (plugged into my laptop)
It was working a few weeks ago, and we moved the computer to another room. it was around then that it stopped. kmix and alsamixergui show unmuted/sounds up, and apps act like they are playing, but no sound comes out at all.
You said that it was "around that time" the sound stopped working. Was it when you reassembled (plugged everything back in) that you found it did not work? Do you have more than one sound card (i.e. a separate card and on-board sound)?
What you have described sounds like a component issue, with the speakers, etc. not connected in some way because you indicate the multimedia apps seems to be working as though they are issuing sound. I had a similar issue not long ago and I found that I had connected my speakers to the on-board sound jack instead of the PCI card jack that the system was configured for.
have you checked all of the sound sliders on kmix, is pcm at the bottom because if that goes to the bottom you get no sound but it does not show up as muted.
