sound problem with sarge

I'm using i386 sarge with 2.4 kernel. I set Debian to use aRTs for audio and I get no error at all, just no sound at all. I also made sure I opened up KMix and turned the volume up. My sound worked on slackware with out any tweaking so I'm at a loss to even know where to start.

Any help is welcomed!

Make sure your user is part of the audio group. The command:
groups <username>
at a terminal should tell you which groups the user belongs to. If audio isn't listed, add the user to that group with the comand:
adduser <username> audio
as root. The user will have to log out before the change wil take effect. Other than that, since you haven't provided any hardware/module info, there's not much more I could tell you.

have you tried typing alsamixer as root.
possible that it is muted
