I'm wondering if i perhaps blacklisted it or something in the alsa config? but i'm not sure where to find that??
is there a relevant module i can check?? any other things to check??

Have you checked your system Bios as it may have been somehow turned off on the motherboard.

Needed some modules that were missing and kernel rebuild.

Is there a way to find out what modules you need for a device that where the module isn't present?? (other than searching google, which i have found.. unreliable) i've found this a real pain.

lspci -v

will show you your devices....then google the sound device and its id.
Most ppl can remember there device is intel or x or y so you can then read the various docs which is Debian may be at
/usr/share/doc/alsa-base

extract the files to your home folder to read such as
alsa-configuration or hd-audio-models etc

My thunar filemanager allows me to right hand click after unpack and view without extracting. YMMV

I don't know how to get into working in kernels, but what I would probably do is slip a live CD in and see if it picks up the sound card. If it does then I would re-boot and go into synaptic and totally remove the alsa stuff, config files and all and then reinstall them. Hopefully it will configure things and install what you are missing. Just make sure you make a note of what you remove so you get everything back in. Do a re-boot afterward. Good Luck. Maury
