sound in some apps, but not all...

hello,

i have a built in ac97 sound card, and am running the Open Sound System, as it is the only one that works. Previously, i was using the ESD but that was on the 2.4.x kernel, now i am running 2.6.5 (after a debian re-install)

my problem is: I have sound in KDE, and kaboodle...but not in other programs such as Frozen Bubble, XMMS, and when ever i run any flash presentations on the web (using the linux flash plugin, and firefox). For XMMS the program dies when i try to play anything, but all is well in kaboodle.

is there some conf file i should change? am i just dumb? Should i switch back to the 2.4.x kernel?

Thanx in advance,

Timmy P

Sounds like a problem with arts taking control of your sound card.. Never used KDE so I cant help you further than that (if its of any help at all).

i don't want to start a flame war...but i simply can't stand gnome 2.6 compared to kde 3.2

everything works fine (except the flash stuff) in gnome...but i would rather not use it.

what could be the cause of the java thing?

everything worked fine with the 2.4 kernel...maybe i'll just switch back to that.

Comments??? Opinions??? Desktop Environment Suggestions???

Did you reinstall Debian using the new Sarge beta installer?

Have you tried ALSA?

TimmyP 07-24-2004 02:21 AM

i'm not really sure ... i downloaded the images about a month or 2 ago, i'll look into that.

i have not tried alsa yet, but i have had issues with other devices since switching to the 2.6 kernel, so i may just switch back to 2.4. It took a lot of time to get it all working in 2.4, but when i got it working, it worked just fine.

so i've done yet another debian install...and i'm back on the 2.4 kernel. i'm using gnome now, and xmms works as well as sound themes and playing cds. HOWEVER, i can't get any sound from websites (such as the imfamous www.badgerbadgerbadger.com) or sounds from games, such as Tux racer or Frozen Bubble.

any ideas??

EURIKA!

i believe i know for sure what the problem is, but i can't make it go away.

my card is built on to the board (M7VIT Bravo by Biostar). C-Media CMI9761A 6-Channel AC'97 codec.

the c-media driver (from cm website) only supports PCI cards, and when i use modconf, there is no support for onboard c-media, but i have the ac97 codec modules installed.

does anyone have any ideas??
