Sound in Debian

I have just installed SID from Woody, but in both cases I was unable to configure the sound.

My motherboard is an Aopen AK77-8XN, using the integrated VIA8233 AC97 codec and it works well under Red Hat 9.0.

During the Woody installation I selected the VIA82cxxx as an external module and later, during the dist-upgrade to SID I insisted on the VIA driver. But I am unable to hear anything.

I have tried the whole installation process several times but I can not see where my problem is.

żAny ideas?

Are you a member of the group AUDIO ? Check the permissions in /dev/ for more details on that ...

Hi thanks,

I already did that but the permissions were correct. These are the modules I have loaded. I see no alsa. Could this be the problem? I have run alsaconf a few times but it does not detect any PCI sound card...

I've been playing with the mixer quite a bit and I have discovered that ... I can play CD's. But whenever I make a sound test (KDE Control center) it does not produce any sound. I have also tried to reproduce some .avi files and I can see the image but no sound at all.

At least it seems that something works (CD player) but still do not know what the problem is. I think I have tried all the possible mixer combinations but only the CD and the master volume controls have some effect (playing with them I can hear/eliminate the background noise that every loudspeaker produces at high volumes)

Thanks anyway because it might be the right path to follow

I have the same problem.
I also tried using sndconfig, i can hear the sound, but in all other ways no!!
I have an integrated sound chip, it is recognized "ens1371" by my suse 8.1.
During the installation of Woody i installed also the kernel modules for ens1371...

With my VIA AC'97 sound card I had to use alsa drivers to get sound to work correctly.
