Sound glitch in Debian Woody with KDE 3.1.4 upgrade

I've been running Debian Woody with the KDE 3.1.4 upgraded from the official site. It works fine except I have no sound for non-kde aps, like xgalaga or wing. Is there a work around for this? I used to have KDE 2.1 installed from the stock debian install and all sound was fine. This is the same on 3 different machines. All kde apps fine with sound, non kde no sound. ALso same is for my windows progs I have running through wine. I also have IceWM installed and when I invoke my non-kde apps or my windows/wine apps I have sound fine in 3.1.4.

On a side note I heard that installing KDE 3.2 removes an older lib file so that WordPerfect 8 is rendered useless. Is this true? Is there a work around for it. This is keeping me from trying to upgrade to 3.2 until/unless this is fixed as I use WP8 extensively. Sure OOo is nice but for quick and dirty (and using my old wp files) I stick to WordPerfect.
