I noticed that there has recently been some discussion about GStreamer and ALSA on the developer lists.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-gtk-g.../msg00040.html

http://lists.debian.org/debian-gtk-g.../msg00054.html

I don't use Gnome (or GStreamer) but after reading these messages it seems to me that GStreamer uses OSS by default and that would be one possible reason why you have no sound when using it. It appears that you can use Gnome Preferences or gconf-tool to "change the current audiosink of existing users to alsasink". It also seems that Debian developers are planning to change the default settings so that in the future GStreamer's sound should work out of the box, without any need for extra tweaking. :)

Hi,

I confirm you have to disable Gnome sound and use ALSA instead so that sound can work.
When a prompt appears asking you, during alsaconf, if sound has to be disabled, just disable it.

cheers
