Some KDE 3.2 -> 3.3 upgrade problems
Okay, so I decided to upgrade from my KDE 3.2 (which had been upgraded from KDE 3.1) on my hard-drive-installed Knoppix machine to KDE 3.3. I basically picked out every package in the installed KDE section that showed an upgrade to 3.3 and selected it. All seemed to go okay except a library file that was listed on two packages so I had to do a --force-overwrite to deal with it.
Anyway, I now have at least two problems: KDM won't let me get past the login screen unless I select the console login mode. No apparent errors (although I haven't check any log files yet), it is just that nothing happens when I push the login button. Konquerer seems to work in "web browser" view mode only. All other modes instantly crash Konquerer with a typical crash dialog box. Maybe there are other problems, but I haven't used the computer enough yet. The new Konquerer sure is a lot faster! I really like the progress that KDE has made over the last two or three years. I used to avoid KDE because it crashed all the time and ran two slow on my computers. Now it seldom crashes, and is much faster. Quite nice actually. It seems that as MS Windows gets slower, Linux-OS gets faster. I'm glad I'm on board the one that at least is going in the right direction. :D |

Yep, you were right. Not everything got upgraded.
What was interesting is that I really thought I ckecked for this the other night, but then that was an apt-get update ago. Maybe the other packages came straggling in later. Anyway, all seems to be working well now. Note that I rarely even try (or succeed with) ambitious upgrades like this with non-debian distributions. So I am very pleased with things right now. |

Knoppix uses apt pinning so that most of your packages end up coming from testing so sometimes as you have found you get odd little things happening until the packages move to testing or you go out of your way to actually get them from unstable to fix the missing package(s) you need. Quote:
