Software compilation

I was wondering are there any other ways to create dep packages out of a programms source code other then using checkinstall. I have had mixed success with it so far soemtimes i just fails at the checkinstall stage.

So are there any other methods available to me for creating a deb package out of source in order for easy removal later on as I dont want to go hunting round removing bits that makeinstall put on the system.

Thanks
Michael

I believe checkinstall has been left out of newer debian repositories because it no longer fit Debian's quality requirements (I could always be mistaken though).

The actual way to make debian packages is to follow this guide or one of these:
http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/336
http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-pkg_basics.en.html
