So how long will a net install take?

Hello, Im thinking of switching from Libranet to Debian... How long will it take for me to do a net install or do you recommend that I just download the iso images? I kinda got shocked that there are 12 isos in the debian site

and btw I want to install Debian Sarge..

if you have a decent connection (4 Mb/s cable for me), it will take an hour to download the components for a basic desktop system (kde/gnome/x/base). i'd say it's a lot more convenient to do a net install rather than downloading and burning a ton of iso's. the net install only downloads what is actually needed.

if you're using a modem, steer clear of a net install. purchase the discs from a vendor.

You don't have to download all the 12 iso's . You can indeed do a netinstall, or you can download the first 3 iso's: with that 3 you will be able to do a complete install, and only very few programs most people want aren't on the first three. I you have such a program you can download them after the install.

Netinstall was for me 2 hours downloading with 40 kb/s. The time for the rest of the installation depends highly on if you know what you want .

Succes!

Did a floppy install via Wi-Fi on an old Armada 7400 unto a 40 Gig week ago;
once we found the combination of images (initial boot floppy had
to recognize EIDE triflex controller, and drivers had to recognize Wi-Fi)
the install took 10 minutes or so., and used up about 1 Gig.
(11b averaged about 2Mb/s (2 * 10 * 60))
