Simple, easy - I need a USA keyboard layout
 

I'm working with a VM from Germany, and I just picked up on the fact that only english keyboard settings are international, which means I have no quote marks " I just want to set my locale to en_US and import a keyboard. Anyone can tell me how to do this? Never had a problem where USA english wasn't a choice on a system...

If you have been using VirtualBox, then you should set your keyboard type during the installation of your guest OS although even when it is installed you can change it in the normal way for that OS. What layout you choose in the guest works irrespective of what it is set to in the host OS.

Actually, there are different types of English keyboard. The sort you have will be determined by the locale your computer was marketed for. So what language keyboard are you using? The GB english keyboard is quite different from the US keyboard and that is why you have @ instead of " and will have a £ on the 3 key amongst others. You did not say what distro you are using or what desktop you have. GNOME and KDE both have menu based settings to change keyboard layouts and it's quite straightforward with both. Both can set you a US keyboard - or any other for that matter.

I have not been using Virtual Box, its a VMWARE vm of etch, the selections he offers are USA international, 4 types of dvorak, and 1 macintosh. The mac layout seems to work now, but I am worried that something weird is mapped somewhere. I did not do any install of the VM, and I'm running windows as the host. Inside the guest VM, I don't have a USA keyboard, my guess is because the German guy who made the VM wanted to shrink it down and figured international english would be okay. I am inside Gnome, and using a standards USA keyboard. I used the keyboard manager in gnome, the problem is that he didn't include the keymapping for en_US, I can't even set my locale to en_US its set on en_ZA....

I guess someone could just copy their en_US keymapping and send it to me? As long as I know where to put it, I'm sure it will be okay. I'd also like to know what else I need to import to allow me to set my locale to en_US.
