Silent xmms failure with audio CDs

Whenever I load xmms 1.2.10 on my Debian sarge testing/main laptop and try to play an audio CD, nothing happens - no errors, no warnings, no nothing. After forcing the permissions of /dev/hdc to 666 and trying again, I still got nothing.

Are there any troubleshooting measures I can try to make xmms noisy enough to say what the problem may be?

Try to open the audio cd with other player, you can use totem.

If the results are the same, check your volumes.

Check if its just with audio cds or with any kind sound (mp3, wav, etc.).

If the problem is just with audio cds then check your analog cd cable from your cd unit on your box.

You have to have the audio CD plugin installed (I think it is by default), and you have to configure the device and directory for your audio CD's

Under prefs >> Audio Plug >> Config:

Device /dev/hdc
Directory is your mount point from your /etc/fstab

such as: /mnt/cdrom

then

xmms /mnt/cdrom
