Setting up Print server on Debian
 

Dear Linux/Debian,

I am a bit (very) new at the whole linux environment. I installed debian on my old computer as I hear from friends that its great. I setup my print environment without complications. I also setup Samba server and samba client. I can navigate using SMB protocols. I also setup KDE to use as a windows environment without too much fuss.

I started to hit problems when I tried to setup a printer for this computer. I thought to use one out of two options but before I say which ones let me tell you what I have so you can get a clearer picture.

my local network has various computers (MSwindows 2k, XP) and a workgroup, they share via windows networks. The samba environment provides this debian computer with the means to communicate with the network. That is happening without problems.The network also got a print server that connects 2 USB printers to the network using a little server: EUSSO USP1221-AU.

Now back to the two options:
option 1 setup a printer to be shared from one of the MS windows computers.
option 2 setup a printer that would look at the print server and find the printer.


If I use the add printer wizard from KDE the SMB printer option is disabled (even though I have got my samba environment setup and it works fine using terminal emulators).

option 2 would be the prefered option anyway. I do know that the print server uses port 631 but somehow it is configured on the windows as if there are diferent ports : 1, 2 and a third one I do not use. I have installed the drivers I need (HPIJS drivers) for HP but when I print a test page I get nothing.

i do know that this is a bit of a lng way to explain my problem but I have not got anything I can send you to give you more acurate information. Help will be most aprecieted. Any more information you need please let me know. I do have to say, debian looks very good (I am very impressed with thw whole look and feel of it, as well as the easy way to keep everything up to date ) and I have only seen it work for the last 24 hours. It made think in a much different way ...

There is info out there, but it did me no good. I had trouble getting an HP printer working with Debian Sarge under cups. I found this site, and it helped me get my printer working perfect: http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/install.php Follow the directions line by line and it should work for you.

Hi Guys,

I have done both of your options and hit a couple of side problems. They were simple enough. apt-get update gave me errors (malformed list file) when I looked at it it seemed like there was a cpuple of carriage retuns that should have not ben there. Removing them got the problem solved.

I installed all components as per Baird' referencing document. All of the CUPS apps were already applied.

Got replies from WinPC and setup printer. but got several times: (device not found). So I went for Tons of Fun's options.
Again all options were installed from previus attempts. but installed all the hp drivers without complications.

then did another apt-get upgrade and returned to the KDE manager and found that the windows SMB printer option was now enabled. Followed the steps and -Voila! It worked.

Thank you for your help. Its most apreciated I am starting to really like Debian and KDE now.
