Screen freeze when back from Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F7
 

The system is Debian Etch, kernel 2.6.8-1-386, Xorg, KDE3.4
(A Medion laptop with ATI9200SE video card.)
The problem appears when switching virtual consoles and returning back to F7 - the screen freezes with a tiny color line at the top of the screen with my KDE desktop at background :| (I think it is the screen only, not the whole system that freezes; the keyboard seems to be nonresponsive as well.)
It appears everytime when there is a full screen change, for exaple when trying to run a GL game or something like that. (It's OK with the GL screensavers though.)

I can't say when I fist met the problem, but it might be when upgrading and changing XFree86 with Xorg.
It seems like the problem is not dependend of the window manager, I've tried XFCE and IceWM as well.

I can't see any error messages in my xorg log file.

When in Ctrl+Alt+F1 the only way of returning back to X is killing it and starting it again :|

I've spent much time in the net trying to find a solution for the problem. Unfortunately I still can not understand where exactly the problem is (xorg, framebuffer, dri...?)

I'm also using Ubuntu Linux. When switching the virtual consoles (returning back to Ctrl+Alt+F7) I can see the same "freeze" with the same tiny color horizontal line at the top of the screen. Exactly like in my Debian system. But in Ubuntu the "freeze" is just for a second, after which the screen is restored back to normal.

I haven't reinstalled my Debian for about 2 years and I do not plan to do so. (In the recent 2 at least ;)

I'll be grateful for any suggestions or useful links.

you might try adding Sid's repository and getting xorg from it

Is it a xorg problem, really?
 

I'm not sure it is a Xorg problem, but it could be so. I'll try adding unstable repository from Sid and upgrading my xorg. Hope it helps...

Problem solved with upgrade
 

It seems the problem was a bug in the xserver-xorg. I've upgraded (apt-get dist-upgrade) my system and the problem disappeared. My video card and 3D functions work much better as well.

however I'm not sure how safe is to do dist-upgrade to unstable ?
