I had a similar problem in gnome and alsa, though I can't say if there weren't problems as root or in kde (never tested either of them). I solved it by opening the mixer and in the options tab there was an item called "PCM out path & mute". It had two options and I switched from "pre3d" to "post3d". That fixed it, though I have no idea why nor what that option is supposed to do (I was just trying different settings with the mixer and this worked).

In your case though, if you had a better experience without alsa, I'd say maybe uninstalling alsa is a better choice.

Thanks..i searched for those options not to find any....whether i need to purge alsa-base and alsa-utils as my soundcard (hda intel) is detected with latest kernel (2.6.14 smp).or i need to edit any conf.files like /etc/modules.conf

Thanks...

I would suggest purging (dpkg -P) the two packages alsa-base and alsa-utils to go back to the sound configuration you had before you noticed the problem.
