Are you using xsane to access your scanner? If not what are you using?

So you do this:
1. Turn on your scanner
2. When it's up and ready you turn on xsane.
Now what happens?

So this appears to be a permissions issue. Also can you check if the brscan-skey as well as the brscan2 package is installed. For permission issues please check out this link and follow the instructions.

Try going to this site, accept the EULA, and download the driver installation package. Carefully follow the installation instructions on the download page. That should make the scanner work. If not, post back.

That will get you nothing. It's just word salad. Read the instructions on the download page and follow them exactly.
