i would use a KVM install for xp


seeing as it is no longer supported by Microsoft
there will never be any security fixes to it

set up a small kvm image it can even be on a network storage drive to save space
and you can pass through the parallel port for the scanner
but i bet it ALSO has a USB1 / usb2 port
