I think the sound driver usually covers sound input too - perhaps the volume is turned down too far?
What exact error do you get when you try to record, or do you just get silence?
Try running alsamixer, a console mixer program (assuming you're using alsa), hit F4 for capture volumes, and make sure volumes are decent. If you see any that are muted, you can mute/unmute by hitting M with that item selected. Or do it in your favorite desktop / GUI program. Also hit space to enable capture from an input.
