Sarge /tmp/.X0-lock

Sarge now comes up with gui login. Root is the only user which gets the system going.
When I get bash by Ctrl-Alt-F5/F1 or F7 and login I can't see a gui. Startx gives Server Error ...
remove /tmp/.X0-lock.

At root I tried init 3, got nothing. The init 5, still nothing.
At bash I tried startx -- :1 and got a hang that said "waiting for server..."

Google found some help but most of it was just idle chatter like remove /tmp/.X0-lock
instead of specific instructions.
Can you tell me the keystrokes to cure the problem?
Thanks,
