Sarge-testing To Etch-testing?

Hello,

I've just installed the base for sarge-testing, seeing as I don't have any spare CDs to burn a newer version. Unfortunately, as I expected, apt-get seizes up and tries to get me to remove e2fsprogs, which is a bit silly.

Looking around, it sounds like I need to change my sources list to come from stable which is sarge now? I'm gonna try a few things from the forum, but in the mean time, could someone give me a list of steps to go from sarge-testing to etch-testing?

So if I get you, you installed Sarge from an old "testing" version CD and now you want to upgrade to Etch (current testing)?

Try performing aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade

Aparently aptitude handles the upgrade from woody to sarge better, and since you're still on the "old" sarge, maybe you just need to install a newer aptitude first... http://www.debian.org/releases/sarge...ading_aptitude

This is how I did it (I still had some problems, though):
  1. Install Sarge/testing
  2. Edit your sources.list to point to stable instead of testing
  3. apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade
    This will fail because of that dependency loop (I can't remember in which of the upgrades, but I'd guess it is the dist-upgrade). Pass '-o APT::Force-LoopBreak=true' to the offending command.
  4. Edit your sources.list again to point it back to testing
  5. apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade
    Again this should fail because of the same problem. Repeat the solution from before.
  6. Done!
You should do this with as little software installed as possible, to minimize the chances of failure (and download times). I'd do it after a base install. IT should be noted that I had some problems with some initscripts, but I can't tell if this was because the upgrades, or it was my system's fault.

Since it is a newly installed system, why not just download the etch netinstall and start over. You will have to download as much if not more anyway, especially if going sarge-testing->sarge-stable->etch.
