Sarge Net-Install problems

Hi,

I'm having difficulty in installing Sarge from the net. I have successfully done this on ONE PC already - awaiting to do it on another.....

Right, the problem is this - I cannot get the NIC to recieve DHCP.
Specs as follows: XP2000, 256MB, MSI KT4-Ultra (KT400 Chipset), 40Gb, Realtek 10/100 NIC (generic type) and Intel Pro 10/100.

I have run the net-install cd, and it picks up the NICs (I used one, then replaced it with the other to try again).

I run ADSL through a DSL-300G+ Ethernet ADSL Modem - straight through Ethernet connection from modem -> NIC.

It works on the following (this PC): XP2400, 768MB, EPoX 8RDA+ (NF2 Chipset), 60Gb, Onboard NIC (and I also inserted Realtek one too, and it picked it up).

Could it be the modem, NIC, or mobo which isn't working? Any ideas much appreciated :-)

Thanks,

Tribal

Well, if you're using the netinst version of Debian installer and you cannot get dhcp working during installation, then one possible option would be to install just the base system from the installer CD first. And after booting into your new Debian system and logging in, you can "su" to root, run "pppoeconf" to set up network, run "apt-setup" to set Debian package repositories, and use "aptitude" to download & install the rest of the packages you want. (Notice that there's a "Tasks" category in Aptitude that gives you a list of suggested packages that you'll need for some common tasks, like setting up a server or a desktop environment.)

Not quite..... nearly though

Sorry if its been a while since I posted this, but I thought I would carry on instead of a new post..

The NICs seem to always pick up 192.168.0.2 as their IPs - supposedly from DHCP....

The Ethernet modem is 192.168.0.1 by default on the LAN side, so I know it is "sort-of" working. I cannot Ping the modem, despite it being a direct-connection..

The PC I am on at the moment (see above for specs) works fine for DHCP - just picks up my IP from the modem, and away I go.

Would there be any reason why the NICs can't pick up the DHCP IP - I mean the SAME on this PC has? I have tried turning off the modem, and back on again etc etc - doesn't work....

Help!

Not being a networking expert, I can only point you to some relevant documentation, hoping you'll find there new ideas for solving your problem yourself. Or perhaps someone else has more precise suggestions to help you. But while you're waiting for better help, take a look at these documents:
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/re...ateway.en.html
http://www.icon.co.za/~psheer/book/node28.html.gz

If you do find a solution, please post it here so that others can benefit from your experiences. And if you don't find solution on your own, tell us what you have tried out so far, and maybe someone will offer you further suggestions.
