Talking Sarge install

Hey Guys,

I'm a noob to Debian so this is probably going to be a stoopid question but...

I've downloaded the first two CDs.
Installed the first one without a prob, (base system)
but when it asks for the additional packages it spits disk2 out.
I've booted disk 2 up and it seems like some sort of rescue disk.
Which disks do I need to install Gnome and all the good stuff???

Thanks in advance...

hi there,

in fact you don't need. you need the base system plus "apt-get"..
if your network it is working then no problem..
apt-get install "whateveryouwant"

just need to find some good debian mirror

regards

Insert CD1 and type 'bf24' (to get the 2.4 kernel), it will walk you thru the network configuration, download the kernel from the net, after that, follow the instructions from:

The Very Verbose Debian Installation Walkthrough
http://osnews.com/story.php?news_id=2016

The article from Clinton De Young will explain everything to get you going, in simple terms.

At the end of the installation install:
#apt-get install x-window-system icewm icewm-themes iceme locales discover vim

(or any other editor of your preference).

$startx

This will allow you to function, enter X and from the terminal, as root, do an

#apt-get update
#apt-get upgrade

go to /etc/apt/sources.list and change the word 'stable' for 'sarge' (this way when Sarge becomes the 'stable' version in a few days, you won't have to change anything), save and exit. Or if you want Sid replace 'stalbe' for 'sid'.

Still as root from the terminal do:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

after a while, after the dist-upgrade is finished, look at the thread:

Debian Configuration Post-Install
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=224547

and configure Sarge.

Here, you can then install KDE, GNOME, or whatever.

debian-installer is much easier to get a debian system up and running (vs the woody installer).

http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/

you only need one disc, and it will get everything you select via ftp from a mirror that you select.

type "linux26" at the installer boot prompt to install the 2.6 Linux kernel during installation.

I'm pretty keen to get Debian going, so if I can't get apt-get to download from net,
what CDs do I need for a minimum install????
Gnome, Open Office etc

Thanks in advance...

you only need the debian-installer net iso (one disc). it will go out and get what you need for a full working system during the installation process.

http://cdimage.debian.org/pub/cdimag...86-netinst.iso

quickly scanning through your previous posts, it appears that your box is connected via cable modem. so basically, all you need to do is get this one disc. during the install process use "tasksel" to choose an appropriate desktop system, then the installer will go out into the internet ether to retrieve and install those packages that tasksel chose automagically.

good luck.
