Athlon 3000, 1GB RAM, 120GB 7200rpm HDD with 8MB cache. The same install with using apt-get from the internet installs much faster, but when apt-get installs from the cd it takes much longer. This doesn't make any sense. It gets the packages from the cd with no problem and much faster than a download would be, but when it's setting up the package it seems to go slow.
I think it may be a kernel issue. I've noticed that running the system with the 2.6 kernel it seems to have a performance lag as compared to the 2.4 kernel. The system seems to bog down a little with the 2.6 kernel when there are too many programs running, the same number of programs with a 2.4 kernel that shows no slow down at all.
That's basically what I've already done. I think it's a kernel issue at this point. The 2.6 kernel seems a little bloated in some way. It's just not as efficient as the 2.4 kernel.
What I want is to get a complete installation, complete meaning all the programs that are a major part of an install, so the internet is not needed or is only needed for a few packages. I want to be able to get a "complete" install on a computer without internet access if the situation presents itself. Which I know a few people who still only have dial-up and doing a net install that gets 600mb or more from ftp is just not practical. With my dsl I like net install the best, but someone with dial-up it's not really an option.
