VMWare does not run Windows applications---you would use it to install **Windows** on Linux. I don't think that is what OP wants.....

In addition to WINE, you might also want to try CrossOver. (http://codeweavers.com)

With a focus on windows games, i think Cedega can do it as well. ( based on winex, not free ). I've never try to install windows application this way.

It never amazes me people want to run Windows programs on Linux...best OS would be to use Windows.

The OP didn't mention running Windows programs (it might have been what he meant, but it wasn't what he wrote): He mentioned Windows files.

This could certainly have been clearer but if what is meant is editing previously created Office documents, OpenOffice would be a good suggestion. But, by and large, linux is linux and you'll be happier as soon as you stop trying to make it behave like Windows.

It is a Windows files not the Windows itself , an exe files which cannot be opened by Openoffice.
Also I'm trying to convince my son (10years) to work with Linux but he cannot give up ICQ with its nice graphics (yes I know there are substitutes in Linux) so ...

BTW- is VMWARE free ?

wow I didn't care for ICQ when I WAS running Windows.. the replacements out there imho, were actually better than ICQ,.
to each his own I guess..

vmware is free, and setup is pretty straightforward but heres a how-to anyway..
