It never amazes me people want to run Windows programs on Linux
The OP didn't mention running Windows programs (it might have been what he meant, but it wasn't what he wrote): He mentioned Windows files.
This could certainly have been clearer but if what is meant is editing previously created Office documents, OpenOffice would be a good suggestion. But, by and large, linux is linux and you'll be happier as soon as you stop trying to make it behave like Windows.
It is a Windows files not the Windows itself , an exe files which cannot be opened by Openoffice.
Also I'm trying to convince my son (10years) to work with Linux but he cannot give up ICQ with its nice graphics (yes I know there are substitutes in Linux) so ...

BTW- is VMWARE free ?
there are free versions usually included in the repos' for your distro....but also available at the vmware site.\\
