Running Fluxbox

Hey everyone,

Quick questions about fluxbox:

1) How do I update it? I tried Apt-get and it said I have the highest version...but the version I have is "Fluxbox 0.1.14 : (c) 2001-2002 Henrik Kinnunen"

2) How do I change the wallpaper? I have asked this before with Blackbox, but I have thus far not been able to find any of the files that were mentioned.

Side story, I have a "~/.fluxbox" directory, but I do not have a "~/.blackbox" directory.

3) Widgets. How? Where? What am I talking about; I think that these are widgets... Things like the toolbar on the right hand side.

Here are some more...

4) That nifty Mac Doc on the above (^) page.

5) LOOK AT THAT KRELLM! How do I get one like that?

6) What is iDesk and fdesk?

As you can see I really want to mod out my Flux Desktop (kinda sorry I installed Gnome now, if I can get Flux to work, I won't want it). I am not afraid to get my hands dirty in the config files, BUT that is not exactly my area of expertiese. I am ready to learn and mod.

UPDATE: Found the tar.gz files for 0.9.9

Alas I am having problems with "./configure"

I get the following right at the end:

checking for t_open in -lnsl... no
checking for socket in -lsocket... no
checking for X... no
configure: error: Fluxbox requires the X Window System libraries and headers.

Interesting.

AFAIK, that's the latest stable one, at least in Sid.
check fluxbox's site.

2) How do I change the wallpaper? I have asked this before with Blackbox, but I have thus far not been able to find any of the files that were mentioned.

No idea, for this and other cosmetic questions, go to the fluxbox forums and the #fluxbox channel, in the IRC.
I don't use any of that, sorry.

Side story, I have a "~/.fluxbox" directory, but I do not have a "~/.blackbox" directory.

You should have ~/.blackboxrc as a hidden file, best to man blackbox.

3) Widgets. How? Where? What am I talking about; I think that these are widgets... Things like the toolbar on the right hand side.

4) That nifty Mac Doc on the above (^) page.

5) LOOK AT THAT KRELLM! How do I get one like that?

same as question 2

6) What is iDesk and fdesk?

programs that come with icons.

As you can see I really want to mod out my Flux Desktop (kinda sorry I installed Gnome now, if I can get Flux to work, I won't want it). I am not afraid to get my hands dirty in the config files, BUT that is not exactly my area of expertiese. I am ready to learn and mod.

You can make Fluxbox, Gnome's window manager instead of Metacity, just a thought.

IIRC, version 0.9.9 is a development version, still not in .deb format, if you
want to install .tar.gz files or from source look into the program 'alien' from Debian, otherwise, these files may scatter in your system, causing problems later on.

Thank you. I have been googling, but I do not know what to search for to be perfectly honest.

I am not sure what words to use to make the best results.

Also shortly after I posted this, I found the document handbook on Flux's site...figures.

The main difficulty I am having is that I cannot get the unstable build to install.

The fluxbox_0.9.9-1_i386.deb file is for Debian Unstable. If you are using stable or testing you may not be able to install.

download http://logicvortex.net/dists/sid/mai...9.9-1_i386.deb

dpkg install /wherever_you_downloaded_to/fluxbox_0.9.9-1_i386.deb

Just noticed someone is running superkaramba in one of those screenshots - how did he manage that? If I try that all the graphics are mixed up... I think it has something to do with the wallpaper, it doesn´t seem to detect it (I use display from imagemagick to set the backround)
