Doing this with 5 netcards will make some seriously complex routing tables. Why don't you just plug them into a switch? With 5 net cards, the computers won't be able to see each other unless you route among cards as well. Assuming you use no ethernet bridging, you'd need:
Code:
eth0 - eth1
eth0 - eth2
eth0 - eth3
eth0 - eth4
eth1 - eth2
eth1 - eth3
eth1 - eth4
eth2 - eth3
eth2 - eth4
eth3 - eth4
That'll be fun to manage.
Why do you want them all connected in to the one box?

What exactly you want to do with this configuration. From what I understand, you want that the 2 computers connect to the Net through the gateway running the Debian OS. Each computer has an eth and connects with each other with a RJ45 cable. The modem will be the router so that your local network will appear as one single computer on the net, the gateway is there just to organize the traffic like a hub or switch and distribute the info that a particular computer requests. Or what you want is the gateway will be the router in such case the modem will be worthless. It is mysterious that the eth1 stopped working, if it is not an physical problem.

I have the same question as cigarstub, why do you want such a configuration?? Why don't you just buy a switch an plug the computers into that switch. This way you only need 2 network cards in the gateway, one that goes to the modem and one to the switch.

Well, then the best way to do all this would be to use ethernet bridging to make a large bridge out of all the connections to computers on the LAN. Then configure standard IP forwarding to the 'net.
