root passwd corrupted ?

just installed a debian system on a dual boot machine and everything started out good. this is from the knoppix 5.0 disc that came with LX Format mag with kernel 2.6.17 on an amd sempron (64 bit) machine running the kde desktop. I've reinstalled twice and the same thing's happening for a third time. after running an upgrade with synoptic or just installing a few things with synoptic, I can no longer do changes with gui's that require root privleges. I enter my root password when asked and am told password is wrong. this is not the case in a shell, I can su and work as root. Is there a default password after using synoptic that I don't know how to find or is there a bug corrupting my password ? Any help is greatly appreciated.

theres a bug in kdelibs-bin atm. may be your problem, can you su from the console?

themouser 10-26-2006 07:08 PM

yes i can su from the console. I just tried resetting the passwd from runlevel 1, the change was accepted, but i still can't do admin changes from kde (password incorrect!). Is there a way to reset or get kde to recognize my pwd from console? Re-install seems pointless unless I forgo adding applications (but what fun is that?). I did a full upgrade with synoptic yesterday, which didn't address the bug. Maybe there's another debian distro you can recommend. Thanks very much for the help.

thanks for the advice to upgrade. problem solved for now by upgrading and adding packages via apt and not using synoptic.not graphical but then again i'm used to using yum with fc5. thanks again
