Roll back to stable ?

I was in need of a software program which is only available in Debian unstable. But, when I installed it through apt-get, it upgraded the whole Gnome from 2.8 to 2.10 and now I have strange bugs in my pc. The volume control on the task bar is stuffed up and it wont even open!

I am running Debian Sarge 3.1. Is it possible to roll back to the stable stage which my pc used to be ?

Is it okay if I do ->dpkg-reconfigure -a , so that it will reconfigure all the packages ?

I am a newbie myself and solution I'm offering is brute force. Why not uninstall all the packages that you want to downgrade and install them again with :
"apt-get -t stable install package_name" where I'd suggest you use aptitude as it "remembers" which packages were pulled as dependencies and removes them too when you uninstall the package, I guess "aptitude -t stable install package_name" would work fine too.
